Jeffrey Reads

My name is Jeffrey. I used to read all lot, but the past few years I've slacked off. As my 2018 New Year Resolution, I decided to make it a point to read more this year. This blog is to motivate me and keep track of all the books I read.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

An American Marriage - Tayari Jones

I started this book at the beginning of February, but it was a super busy month, so I'm just now finishing it!

I took a couple of days after finishing to write this review because I really didn't know what to say about it. I still don't but I needed to post something. SUPER SPOILERY BELOW.

I really enjoyed this book, but I wasn't particularly satisfied with the ending. I also never liked any of the characters except Celestial. Maybe that's the point. I don't think I was supposed to like any of them period, or really choose a side, but I felt like Roy and Andre both put her in terrible positions throughout the entire book. She don't need no man, but they kept trying to claim her. I've read several reviews who thought that Celestial was selfish and should have stood by Roy while he was wrongly incarcerated, and I guess everyone has their own interpretation of their relationship, but to me, despite Roy's circumstances, he was just a terrible husband, even before he was sent to prison.

Anyway... that's my thoughts on that. Ms. Jones wrote a book I will not soon forget.
